Melodic instruments, such as the steel drum, are excellent for supporting auditory discrimination – children learn to distinguish between different tones, which also helps them distinguish between speech sounds. The “play and repeat” game (where an adult plays a simple sequence of notes and the child imitates it) strengthens memory, attention and the rhythmicity of speech. Try accompanying the notes with syllables or short rhymes.
