Each card can be used to expand active expression through questions such as: “Where does the animal live? What does it eat? What sound does it make?” Linking the picture with a letter also supports phonemic awareness – the child associates the first sound with the word (for example, “Z for zebra”). I recommend including descriptions during play: “A zebra is striped. It lives in Africa.”
